Causes of Neck Pain and/or Associated Headaches
Neck pain and headaches, although common, can be a debilitating problem for those who suffer from them. Your neck is composed of bones (vertebrae) that run from your skull to your upper body. The bones, ligaments, muscles and nerves in your neck support your head and allow motion. Any abnormality, inflammation or injury in these structures can cause neck pain, arm pain or stiffness.
Symptoms of Neck Pain and Headaches Usually Occur From the Following:
Poor posture (excessive forward head posture)
Muscle strain or tension
Trauma
Overuse/repetitive motion
Strain/sprain
The Suboccipital muscles are very small muscles located at the top of your cervical spine just below your skull. Not only do these muscles provide dynamic stabilization of the upper head they allow us to move our head from left to right and in extension. If these muscles are “locked” together there is constant tension in that area. These muscles can entrap surrounding nerves and vasculature, often times causing headaches.
At Behm Muscle & Joint Clinic we conduct a complete assessment of your cervical spine utilizing movement based tests as well as orthopedic tests to determine the cause of your pain. Our services include soft tissue therapies, corrective exercise and manipulations.
