Myofascial Release Modalities
What is Myofascial Release?
Myofascial Release is a whole body, hands on approach to treatment, producing a profound healing effect upon the body tissues, eliminating pain and restoring motion. At Behm Muscle & Joint Clinic we develop treatment plans that are individualized and customized to each person’s needs. They treat the “cause of the problem” to eliminate the symptoms, in order to make permanent structural changes to help people return to a pain free, active lifestyle.
There Are Two Types of Myofascial Release: Direct and Indirect
Direct Myofascial Release
Direct myofascial release (or deep tissue work) method works on the restricted fascia (it is the bag that surrounds each of our muscles). Practitioners use manual techniques, or other instrument assisted soft tissue methods to slowly stretch the tight fascia by applying a moderate force. Direct myofascial release looks to stretch, lengthen, or mobilize adhesive tissues. The practitioner moves slowly through the layers of the fascia until the deep tissues are reached.
Indirect Myofascial Release
The indirect method involves a gentle stretch, with only minimal pressure, which allows the fascia to “unwind” itself. The gentle traction applied to the restricted fascia will result in heat and increased blood flow in the area. This allows the body’s inherent ability for self correction to return, thus eliminating pain and restoring the optimum performance of the body.
Myofascial Release Modalities Used in Our Clinic
At Behm Muscle & Joint Clinic we utilize various myofascial release techniques to ensure proper sliding and gliding of the soft tissues. When these tissues are not moving correctly or become chronically shortened, improper circulation to the tissue occurs and nerves can become entrapped leading to sharp shooting pain with movements.
Some of the Modalities That Are Used in Our Clinic
-
Instrument Assisted Soft tissue Mobilization (IASTM) – IASTM has two main functions: to break up abnormal densities in tissue, such as scar tissue, and to reinitiate first-stage healing in the body.
-
Foam Rolling
-
Active Release
-
Pin and stretch
-
Post Isometric Relaxation Stretching
-
Band Flossing
