What to Expect From Our Chiropractic Services and Treatments
On your first visit the doctor will complete a full case history and examination of your complaint. Examination involves the use of dynamic movement screens, joint assessment, muscle length assessment, range of motion tests, orthopedic tests, and neurological exams. Based on the results of these tests the doctor will discuss with you what may be causing your condition. From this a plan of care will be established. We pride ourselves in not conforming to the industry standard and taking time with the patient to fully assess their complaint. Each visit is typically 30 minutes in duration.
At Behm Muscle & Joint Clinic we understand that medications and surgeries are options however we believe that conservative non-invasive measures should be exhausted prior to electing to undergo more invasive therapies. Chiropractic care has been proven to be a cost-effective health care specialty in the management of musculoskeletal pain. If you are not responding to our conservative care in several visits, we are able to refer you to other medical professionals.
Treatment Plan Length
Our treatment plans are not open ended, as our goal is to ultimately help you move better, feel better, and live better. The typical treatment plan is 6-8 visits in duration depending on severity of condition.
Laying the Foundation
The body is an amazing thing and we often find that patients in pain have developed compensation patterns either due to their pain or that have led to their pain over time. Because our brain and nervous system influence the muscles of the body, we must stimulate the brain to cause tissues to adapt.
Phase 1: Relief Care
This phase of care is centered around reducing your symptoms. In this phase of care you will be educated on postural changes and behaviors to reduce the severity, frequency and duration of your symptoms. These initial patient visits will consist of treatments and modalities intended to get you out of pain rapidly.
Phase 2: Corrective/Rehabilitative Care
Once we have been able to reduce or eliminate your pain, our goals shift to restoration of function, whether it is based around work duties, activities of daily living, recreational activities, exercise, etc. Pain often goes away very quickly, but the dysfunctions that caused the symptoms often remain and we must recover normal range of motion, strength, endurance, and tissue quality to ensure full recovery. If these are abandoned too soon, the likelihood of recurrence increases significantly.
Care in this phase becomes more focused on activity and performance in functional tests based on your goals and needs. In this phase you will be instructed on stretches, exercises, and things to do at home or work to move the process along as quickly as possible.
Phase 3: Wellness Care
Once recovery of function has been reached, we transition to essentially maintenance care to prevent recurrences and keep you pain free and moving well. In this state we see you on an as-needed basis.
